This set was listed among the anonymous sets on the Moviecard Website for a long time. The only thing I knew about it was that I got one card from this set among a group of cards from Belgium, so I assumed it was issued in Belgium. Belgian collector Pascal Matthys confirmed that this set was issued in Belgium and offered lots more information about this set.
According to Pascal, this set was issued by "Star Gum Works, one of the Belgian Chewing Gum companies from Antwerp. SGW did several series, great quality stuff (their cards were the Rolls Royce of chewing gum cards back then, but hard to find as their products were more costly than their competition like the "Belgian Chewing Gum" company), but ever so hard to deduct what company etc! They never put any company info on their cards. To add to that, they also had either NO numbering or a very chaotic numbering. You really have to be a specialist regarding the other Belgian Chewing gum factories and their cards to know what card is from which company and series. Luckily I know :p"
"Anyway, this is their first set of movie stars that they have made, released in 1953 and unnumbered. Issued with chewing gum (of course), and about 70ish cards were made."
To add the final proof, Pascal sent an image of a wrapper for this set. The wrapper for this set shows a picture of an Esther Williams card from the set. Wrappers for most card sets don't show a picture of an actual card from the set, so this was airtight proof and also a very interesting wrapper. The wrapper is shown when you click the small picture above.
Thanks to Pascal Matthys and Andrew Knight for help with this checklist.
