Notes: Checklist Incomplete. These can be identified by the "CI.-P" on the front. This may be the same set as the Clovis Film Stars (Clovis on Front, Blank Back). Card number 266 in each of these sets shows the exact same picture of Greta Garbo, the only difference being the two say either "Clovis" or "CI.-P".
Two subjects appear to have been issued for each number (however, three number 226s and 239s seen). I have not studied very many of these cards, but I have observed from two different #256 cards that the only real difference I could find between the design of the cards were that the Garbo-Novarro card was missing the dash between "CI.-P" while the Beery-Gable card had the dash, so it is possible that this characteristic could distinguish the two sets from each other.
The numbering for all of the Clovis sets seem to go from 201 to 320.
Clovis was a company from the small town of Pepinster in Belgium that made chocolate candy. The company was in business from 1920 through 1966, when a large fire burned down the factory and put them out of business.
Cards from this set seen with a hole punch - this could be the result of some prize redemption, where the cards had to be turned in for a prize, then they were returned with a punch hole so they could not be redeemed again. Or it could just be the result of some kid with a hole punch messing up the cards.
An album was issued with this set. I have seen Clovis albums in different sizes, so there were at least two different Clovis albums issued. Click the small picture above to see some scans of a Clovis album. In the Clovis album scans pictured, there are a mixture of cards with "CI.-P" and "Clovis" on the front pasted into the album.
Collector Richard Minns managed to gather up 9 different albums to examine the cards across the different series to try to help figure out this interesting and confusing group of cards. Richard reports that albums with cards stuck down are found with a mixture of the different Clovis designs. The completed albums were sent away to redeem an offer or prize as most albums have an address inked on the front cover. The albums were presumably returned to the sender once the offer was redeemed (this appears to have been done by hole punching each individual card stuck into the album which must have been a time consuming project.) One of the albums seen does not have hole punching but GF stamped on to the cards instead. Lots of loose cards turn up with the hole punching or GF stamp suggesting they were either removed from albums or loose cards (sets probably) could be sent in too.
There is a space in the middle of each album page which appears to be designed for either spares or postcards as it is a large oblong divided into smaller squares Most albums have random European Postcards glued into the space.
The albums do not have captions or names or checklists but contain a mixture of cards from different Clovis series so presumably collecting a set of the many different Clovis series was a valid way to redeem the offer too. This means that each album is different and unique as any different combination of numbers from any series could be used to do so.
