Notes: Checklist Incomplete. These can be identified by the word "Clovis" on the front and text on the back.
It appears that there are at least three different sets of these with the text backs with the same appearance but different stars for the same numbers. Overall, it looks like there are four different sets of Clovis cards among the different designs numbered from 201-320, with some of the same cards appearing with different Clovis designs.
The numbering for all of the Clovis sets seem to go from 201 to 320.
There were Clovis albums put out to hold the cards. The albums do not have captions or names or checklists.
Collector Richard Minns managed to gather up 9 different albums to examine the cards across the different series to try to help figure out this interesting and confusing group of cards. Richard reports that albums with cards stuck down are found with a mixture of the different Clovis designs. The completed albums were sent away to redeem an offer or prize as most albums have an address inked on the front cover. The albums were presumably returned to the sender once the offer was redeemed (this appears to have been done by hole punching each individual card stuck into the album which must have been a time consuming project.) One of the albums seen does not have hole punching but GF stamped on to the cards instead. Lots of loose cards turn up with the hole punching or GF stamp suggesting they were either removed from albums or loose cards (sets probably) could be sent in too.
There is a space in the middle of each album page which appears to be designed for either spares or postcards as it is a large oblong divided into smaller squares Most albums have random European Postcards glued into the space.
The reason why there were at least 4 cards of each number is likely to enable collectors to complete sets. More chance of doing this if there were 4 different cards of each number. The albums do not have captions or names or checklists but contain a mixture of cards from different Clovis series so presumably collecting a set of the many different Clovis series was a valid way to redeem the offer too. This means that each album is different and unique as any different combination of numbers from any series could be used to do so.
Clovis was a company from the small town of Pepinster in Belgium that made chocolate candy. The company was in business from 1920 through 1966, when a large fire burned down the factory and put them out of business.
The anonymous biscuit card series (The Cream Set Numbers 201-320) can be found in these albums so these were definitely issued by Clovis. All series begin at 201 up to 320.
Date info: A date inked to an album cover is 1933, so that is presumably when these cards were issued.
