Notes: Cards are blank-backed. There is a variation for card #22, it can be found with film studio listed as Paramount or Columbia. These cards were printed one on a 10-card box of cigarettes or two on a 20-card box.
This set was met with great enthusiasm when it was released as it was the first new cigarette card set issued since cigarette cards were stopped for World War II. These cards were printed on the cigarette box slides and were not insert cards, so collectors of the time were not entirely satisfied that cigarette cards had returned, but it was a step in the right direction for them. Unfortunately for the many cigarette card collectors of the time, cigarette card inserts would never return as they had before the war.
British collector Frank Easson wrote a letter to the editor that was printed in the January 1948 issue of The Cartophilic World magazine about his experiences collecting this set:
"Since the introduction of Carreras Ltd. of "Turf" cigarettes I have been smoking these and collecting the "Film Star" slides from same. After purchasing 130 10's packets of the above I have the following results:
I am wondering if anybody else has had any similar experiences to this. With regard to the 20's packets I have fared much better.
I remember some years ago collecting Wills' "Flowering Trees and Shrubs" and obtaining 97 copies of one card before completing my set."
