After the results of the last REA auction (April 2007), I decided to see
how quickly I could build a theoretical set of R60. Over the years, there has been quite a few discussions on exactly how hard it is to get a complete 168 card G-Men set. Many years ago, it was speculated that there were fewer than 10 complete sets. Recent articles speculate that there may be less than 20. In my opinion, there are probably more than 20 currently, although these same sets seem to be resold over & over in the catalog auctions (sometimes slabbed in the meantime). I choose this set because I know of several source outlets (& as many of you know, I'm really interested in the variants of this series), and since I was not spending any real cash I thought I could minimize my timeframe. OK, the results: I began on (or about) May 1 and by Sept 1, I had a complete set (168) in about EX condition (without going to the specialty dealers). Very few of the tough 72 cards were acquired via eBay. The bad news is that the acquisition cost was about $5150. In parallel, I'm working on a theoretical set with the constraints of a 1 year timeframe & a budget not to exceed $3000 (I know; good luck on that). If I've left out some details that you feel would be worth sharing, just LMK. < |
