T53 information from Bob Forbes The Cowboy Series was distributed by the American Tobacco Company circa 1909-1912 in packages of Hassan Cigarettes. Though the backs state that there are 50 cards in the series, only 49 cards were produced, probably due to the withdrawal of one of the cards because of its content. The card "An Exciting Game" is found in a 40-card trade issue (The Cowboy, His Life and Fun - D25 - Weber Baking Company) which uses the same artwork as this series. It's speculated that this card, which shows a cowboy using a gun after a game of cards, was planned for the T53 Cowboy Series but was subsequently considered unsuitable for inclusion in the set by the manufacturer (hence the odd number of 49 cards).
