Set Information - Wayne Varney & Bill Zimpleman The Philadelphia Gum Co. in 1948, created a card set about the movie "THE BABE RUTH STORY" , which starred William Bendix and Claire Trevor. The set, whose American Card Catalog designation is R421, contains 28 black & white, numbered cards which measure 2"x2 1/2". The Babe Ruth Story set was originally intended to consist of 16 cards. Twelve additional cards (#'s 17-28) were added when Ruth died before the release of the film. The card backs include an offer for an autographed photo of William Bendix starring as the Babe, for five Swell Bubble Gum wrappers and five cents.
