Issuing Company: Barber's Tea Country of Issue: England Year of Issue: 1959 Color/B&W: B&W Number of Cards in Set: 5 Card Size: Issued as insert with what product: Tea |
Notes: This set shows pictures of five of the stars from the film "Ferry to Hong Kong". These were given out in packages of Barber's Tea. If someone got all five cards, they could send them to the Odeon Theatre in Birmingham, England in exchange for a movie ticket.
Date info: The movie "Ferry to Hong Kong" was released in 1959, so I am placing a 1959 date on this set. In the September/October issue of "Notes and News" magazine from the Cameric Cigarette Card Club, the 1959 date is confirmed for this set from the following blurb from contributor Clifford Duge. "During June and July, 1959, Barber's Teas Ltd. of Birmingham interrupted their normal issue of cards to enclose a series of 5 Film Stars who were appearing in the film "Ferry to Hong Kong." I understand that a complete set of these cards, consisting of Curt Jurgens, Orson Welles, Sylvia Syms, Jeremy Spenser, and Noel Purcel, could be exchanged for two seats at the Odeon Cinema, Birmingham. The manufacturers state that all the cards were packed with their Orange Tips Tea and it would seem almost certain that the Cinema would have destroyed any cards that were handed in to prevent them being used again. All this goes to show how a new series can be issued almost unnoticed and become practically unobtainable within about 12 months. Of course, there may be a few cards floating about the Birmingham area, kept by people who use Barber's Tea, but it looks as though a complete set of these cards is likely to become a rarity of the future."
