Notes: Checklist incomplete. The back contains advertising text for Mahalla in German, French, and Italian. A translation of the back is as follows:

"The most famous film favourites can be found as real silver-bromide photos in Mahalla packs. No albums will be issued, and no exchange of cards will take place."

A lot of the stars shown are from MGM. Another name that crops up a lot is "Emelka", which was a German based film company and distributor, that cooperated with British filmmakers such as Korda and London Films. Then there is the Swiss company "Rex", responsible for distributing films throughout Switzerland.

The title of a film is often printed on the back, sometimes in English, but often in German and sometimes in French. If it's a German or French film, no equivalent English title will be written, because that is the film's original title. However, if only a German or French title is provided of a US or UK film, the correct English title will be given, along with the year and the studio.

A number of titles are listed in German that do not seem to exist, leading to quite a bit of detective work. It would seem that on occasion Mahalla simply translated French titles into German, with strange results. Some titles appear to have been simply made up, and there is no reference anywhere to what they may refer to. Luckily there are often cards of 2 stars together, making it more likely to deduce which film is meant.

Note: If there are multiple images of the same star, and film titles are identical, the card will be described in detail. At the end of the list are a list of film scenes, where no stars are mentioned.

There is an ad for Mahalla cigarettes that shows a picture of some cards from the set and some text about the card set. The text states:

Your favorite movies...
can be found in the form of beautiful original photos in every pack

Date info: Most films were issued between 1951 and 1956, but there are a few films which came out at the end of the 50s, beginning of the 60s. Cards were probably issued over a period of several years, maybe even a decade, hence the broad sweep of 1952-1961.

Thanks to Serge Plumecocq, Nick Bolton, and Richard Minns for help with this checklist. Nick Bolton went to the huge effort of putting together the checklist for this set, I think you will agree that he did an amazing job!
