Notes: These cards can be found with series of eighty or series of 120 backs. These can also be found with blank backs. Blank back versions have been seen machine cut and scissor cut, with strip card versions of these likely for the scissor cut versions. Some unnumbered cards have been seen with the series of eighty backs. Some cards beyond number 80 have also been seen with series of 80 backs. There are cards that go beyond number 120 in the 120 series - these were probably later additions and seem to be a bit scarcer than the earlier numbers.
Cards from this set can been found with a back for Moore's Candies. So far 23 different cards have been seen, all falling within numbers 1-80, so it appears that the Moore's cards are the same as the series of 80 American Caramel set.
Collector Todd Riley reported a card from this set with a back for Clark's Bakery in Columbus, Ohio. The Clark's Bakery card has no number on the front and the back contains a biography of the star. American Caramel E123 cards do not have biographies. The Clark Bakery card shows Lila Lee with the same picture as E123 card #65 and has the exact same biography as T85 Stroller card #165 of Lila Lee. The E123 set and the T85 Stroller cards numbered 101-200 generally follow the same numbering sequence with the Stroller cards adding a 1 to the front of the E123 number, though there are some changes in the movie stars between the two sets. When the stars are the same between the two sets, the pictures are the same, too. Because the stars don't match exactly between the two sets and the Clark's set used the front design from the E123 set and the biography from the Stroller set, this probably indicates the Clark's set is a subset of E123 and does not include all the cards. It is likely that the Clark's set only includes E123 cards that have a matching Stroller card, so the bio could be used. This is probably also the reason why the Clark's cards don't contain numbers, since the non-matching E123-Stroller cards were probably not used and would throw off the numbering sequence. Since only one Clark's card is known at present, it will take the discovery of more Clark's cards to know if this is true or not.
Two different number 18 cards can be found in the series of 80 set. These cards picture Kathlyn Williams and Herbert Rawlinson. Both of these stars were going strong at the time of this card set and both had long careers after this set was issued, so there is no reason why one of these stars would have been replaced. Rawlinson is also on card number 36 in the series of 80 set and Williams has also been seen on #36 but I don't know which series that is from. The #18 and #36 cards of Williams and Rawlinson both show the same pictures. This was probably a number mixup where one of them was supposed to be on one number and the other on the other number and they both ended up on both numbers for whatever reason. Kathlyn Williams has been seen as #18 in the series of 120 set.
For card #19 of Mabel Normand, the series of eighty set and the series of 120 set show different pictures of Normand. The picture used in the series of eighty set is a bit blurry, so that's probably why they switched pictures for the series of 120 set.
Card #9 of Jackie Coogan can be found with or without parentheses for his first name ("Jackie" or Jackie). The picture is the same for both cards. The card without parentheses is in the series of eighty set, while the card with parentheses is in the series of 120 set.
Collector Mark Hellman reports that the 120 series cards can be found with the same text, but with the text positioned slightly differently. In one version, the 6th sentence begins with the word "a" while in the other version, the 6th sentence begins with the word "send". The reason for the variation is that the word "send" was moved from the 5th line to the 6th line for whatever reason.
A special album was issued with this set. The pages of this album were black and about the same texture as construction paper. Cards from this set are sometimes found with black paper stuck to the backs - obviously these cards were removed from their special album at some point.
Collector Greg Galliger located an original packet that was used for these cards. Greg reported that the seller said the packet came with E123 cards inside, but Greg only got the packet, not the cards, so he is unable to confirm the back type for the cards that came in this packet.
Checklist information is close to being complete, with the following exceptions. Additional numbers beyond 80 have been seen with series of 80 backs, and the ones that have been seen are listed in the checklist below, and so far all of these have the same numbers as cards from the series of 120. Probably all of numbers from 81-120 can be found with series of eighty backs, but not all have been seen by me or reported to me yet. It is unknown if any of the numbers beyond 120 can be found with series of eighty backs, but it seems unlikely. Three different unnumbered series of eighty cards are listed in the checklist below, and probably at least all of numbers 1-80 can be found with unnumbered cards. It is unknown if any numbers above 80 can be found as unnumbered cards with series of eighty backs. The series of 120 checklist is complete for numbers 1-120. An additional group of 20 more cards were issued to bring the numbers up to 140. Variations are listed for #9, #18, #19, and #36 and it is unknown if there are any additional variations for this set.
Thanks to Dan Calandriello, Mark Hellman, Greg Galliger, and Todd Riley for help with this checklist.
