Notes: Checklist probably incomplete. The backs for this set state that there are 100 cards in a set, but 117 different cards from this set have been seen, so it is hard to tell what the true number is for this set. The backs also state that three of these cards were given out with every coffee purchase.
The cards used for this set contain the same fronts as those used in the Distinguished Players group (listed in the Theatre Sets section). There are over 200 different cards in the Distinguished Players group of cards. It looks like the McLaughlin set contains a subset of the entire group of Distinguished Players cards. Many different promotions used the same pictures as those in the McLaughlin set. These cards all came from the same source, and can be considered one large group of cards, much like the T206 baseball set was issued with many different brands of cigarettes with differences in which particular cards can be found with a particular brand. The different promotions using these cards started in about 1916 and these cards were still being used in promotions through 1922.
Date info: Florence LaBadie died in 1917 and she is included in this set, so this promotion was probably one of the earlier promotions using these cards. Another version of this set showing LaBadie can be dated to 1916, so I'm placing a date of 1916 on this set, though this version of the set could have been issued a year or two in either direction.
