Issuing Company: Tobacco Products Corp. Country of Issue: USA Year of Issue: 1922 Color/B&W: B&W Number of Cards in Set: 380 Card Size: 1 3/8" x 2 1/2" Issued as insert with what product: Cigarettes |
Notes: Fancy Frame checklist incomplete, the other checklists are complete. The American Card Catalog number for this set is T85. This set can be broken up into different groups of cards.
Skip-Numbered Group
There is a skip-numbered group with numbers ranging from 1-101. Cards from this group have "Strollers Cigarettes" in big letters at the top of the backs, with no biography. If you read the wording on the backs of these cards, it states "Begin buying Strollers Cigarettes today, fifteen cigarettes for ten cents, and start your collection. Biography of each Star on the back of individual portraits." This wording makes it sound like this group of cards may have been giveaway trade cards to advertise the real Strollers set that came in packs of cigarettes, since these did not have biographies on the backs. Only 40 cards have been seen in this group, though the numbering goes from 1-101, and it looks like this group is complete at 40.
In comparing the 40 skip-numbered cards with the biography cards, 28 of the cards contain the same picture as the regular set, though there were minor cropping changes for some of them. For the other 12 cards, 10 pictured the same star as the regular set but with different poses (one reversed pose). For card #61, The skip-numbered set shows Charles Ray and the biography set shows Jack Mulhall. Both had long careers before and after the set, so the card wasn't changed because one of them stopped acting. There were two Jack Mulhall cards in the biography set, #29 and #61, so perhaps the skip-numbered set changed one to Charles Ray just to have 40 different subjects. Card 101 in the skip-numbered set shows Tom Moore and in the biography set shows William S. Hart. The biography set only went to 100, then started a second series at 101, so the Hart card was in the second series. There is a Tom Moore card in the second series with the same pose as the skip-numbered pose, numbered 111.
Biographies on Back Group
The main group of these cards are the cards that show the biographies of the stars on the backs. Cards #1-100 of this group just have the card number and name of the star at the bottom of the cards, while cards #101-200 also show some additional information below the name, such as what studio the star is from. There is a final 20 cards in this group, #201-220, showing unidentified Mack Sennett girls, mostly in beach scenes. Mack Sennett actress identifications in the checklist below are courtesy of Mack Sennett experts Steve Rydzewski and Harry Garvin. The Almonds Cinema Stars set from England uses the same pictures as the #101-200 group of cards.
Fancy Frame Group
The final group of these cards is a separate set of 120 cards, numbered 1-120, showing movie stars in fancy frames. The fancy frame cards are almost identical to the E123 Movie Stars set of 120 cards that was issued by the American Caramel Company, just smaller cards with a few minor differences.
Album
A special album was issued with this set. The pages of this album were black and about the same texture as construction paper. Cards from this set are sometimes found with black paper stuck to the backs - obviously these cards were removed from their special album at some point. This album is very generic-looking, with no mention of Strollers or any identification of the cards or card numbers within the album. It looks as though it was designed to be used for more than one set of cards. It does say "Stars of the Screen" on the cover.
Other Versions of these Cards
There was a parallel set of the biography cards issued in Canada by Tobacco Products Corp. (ACC #C142). The Tobacco Products Corp. cards for this set numbered from 1-280, including some groups of cards seen on American Strip cards but not on American Strollers cards. The skip-numbered 1-101 group have not been seen on Tobacco Products Corp. cards.
There are multiple blank-backed strip cards versions of these cards. One strip card set has versions of the #101-200 group in both numbered and unnumbered versions. Another strip card group shows the Mack Sennett girls, with an additional 20 Mack Sennett cards added. Another strip card set shows the Fancy Frame cards in numbered or unnumbered versions.
The #101-200 group was issued in England with Almonds Bread.
As stated earlier, the Fancy Frame cards are basically smaller versions of the E123 American Caramel set, with some minor changes. The Zoraida Film Stars set from Indonesia uses the same pictures as the Fancy Frame set also.
Date info: This set can be dated to 1922 based on newspaper ads from that year that advertise the cards.
Thanks to Steve Rydzewski, Harry Garvin, and Jim McCullough for help with this checklist.
