Notes: Checklist incomplete. Unnumbered. There was an album issued with this set. This set consists of movie star stamps for Universal Studio. Univeral started in 1912 and this set was issued in 1914, so it was issued very early in the history of Universal. At that time, Univeral had many different brands producing films. Each page in the album is devoted to a different Univeral brand, including Bison, Eclair, Gold Seal, Imp, Nestor, Rex, Sterling, and Victor. There is also a page with no brand.
The album owned by Amit Benyovits contains 9 pages with 6 stamps on each page for 54 stamps in the set. However, The Victor page is missing two stamps, so the checklist below is presumably incomplete if those two stamps were issued. The album displays a date of 1914 on the front.
The studio for the last page is not identified in the album, but an uncut sheet of the stamps shows them to be Vitagraph Stars. The cropping for the stamps in the uncut sheet do not match the cropping in the stamps in the album exactly, indicating more than one printing for those stamps. The pictures for five of the six Vitagraph stamps match exactly the pictures for the same stars in the Vitagraph Players card set.
From a large auction lot of these stamps, it appears that there are many more stamps than were in the album noted above. The auction description indicates that lot contained 180 different stamps. It included stamps from studious including Majestic, Mutual Film, General Film, Rex Stars, Reliance, Vitagraph, Edison, Essanay, Pathe, Selig, Princess, Melies, Kay-Bee, Keystone, George Klen, Biograph, Thanhouser, American, and Kalem. Some stars included in the listing were Charlie Chaplin (titled as Chas. Chaplin), Mack Sennett, Mabel Normand, Louise Lester, Alan Hale, Francis X. Bushman, Lillian Drew, John Ince, Dorothy Gish, Wallace Reid, Rosco (Fatty) Arbuckle, Walter Belasco, & Lillian Gish.
