Issuing Company: Country of Issue: USA Year of Issue: Early 1920s Color/B&W: B&W Number of Cards in Set: Card Size: 1 1/8" x 2 9/16" Issued as insert with what product: Contest |
Notes: Checklist incomplete. These cards appear to be for some sort of game, contest, or offer from something called the "Pocket Fair and Bazaar." Likely date to 1921-1923 given the presence of Jackie Coogan, who became a star with release of The Kid in 1921, and Wallace Reid, who died in January 1923. They are on a light paper stock (not card stock) and are perforated on one side (bottom edge) like a stamp would be. Each of these paper strips is numbered on back with an exchange value (from 3 to 20 cents) and the following text: "WERE YOU LUCKY, If Not, TRY IT AGAIN, The New Idea, Pocket Fair and Bazaar is, conducted for a worthy cause."
Collector Marty Krim provided a picture of a box and sample cards used for this set. He picked up a large group of these cards and none of the numbers on his cards matched the cards that were on the partial checklist on the Moviecard Website. Here are his interesting observations:
COMMENT #1 - More than half the cards have a pull off bottom tab - that is completely blank.
COMMENT #2 - With this tab attached, the cards will NOT fit into the box.
COMMENT #3 - I did not show it in the photo I sent..but if you care, both long side flaps read: BUY A MOVIE STAR PHOTO.
COMMENT #4 - In EVERY case, the card names and numbers currently listed on your **FABULOUS** site, do not correspond with the numbers and names that I have.
COMMENT #5 - When I first obtained this group, I was initially disheartened that there were so many DUPLICATES...(P Frederick (5)...Wallace Berry (4) and more)..but now I see that there are no duplicates since each has its own number.
Thanks to Marty Krim for help with this checklist.
